About ferritic stainless steels

Ferritic stainless steels are magnetic, body-centered cubic, and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. They are cheaper than austenitic grades because they carry little or no nickel. 409 and 439 are the standard automotive exhaust grades; 444 and the superferritic grades (29-4C, E-Brite) handle chloride and seawater service better than 316 at lower nickel cost.
