About AISI/SAE 11xx free-machining carbon steels

11xx grades are resulfurized plain-carbon steels designed for high-volume machining. The added sulfur breaks chips and improves tool life at the cost of weldability and ductility. 1144 is the most common grade for shafts, studs, and screw-machine parts.
