About gray cast iron

Gray cast iron is the most widely produced cast iron, identified by graphite flakes that give the fracture surface a gray color. It absorbs vibration well and machines easily but has low ductility and tensile strength. Engine blocks, machine bases, brake drums, and pipe are common applications. Grades are designated by minimum tensile strength: ASTM A48 Class 30 (30 ksi) and Class 40 are typical.
