About austenitic stainless steels

Austenitic stainless steels are the largest stainless family. They are non-magnetic in the annealed condition and gain corrosion resistance from chromium and nickel (and molybdenum in 316-class grades). They cannot be hardened by heat treatment and rely on cold work for higher strength. Includes the 300-series, super-austenitic grades (904L, AL-6XN), and high-nitrogen variants used in pressure vessels and chemical service.
